Short for S-adenosylmethionine, SAMe is a synthetic form of a compound formed naturally in the body from the essential amino acid methionine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy-producing compound found in all cells in the body. Like omega-3 fatty acids, SAMe exhibits an anti-inflammatory action which can help reduce joint pain and allow the body to be better able to get on with the healing process. In addition to its role as a pain reliever, SAMe may help relieve stiffness, improve mobility and promote cartilage production. To support joint pain, studies suggest that you should start with 400mg a day of SAMe and that benefits should be evident after 7-14 days of supplementation. If noticeable benefits are not achieved within two weeks, you may require a higher level of supplementation. To determine the proper level of supplementation that works for you, gradually increase your dose up to a maximum 1600 mg a day until benefits are achieved.
